Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Qabbag was present on Monday at a conference to launch the ‘Yes’ platform at Arab League (AL) headquarters.

AL Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazalah was also at the event, which was aimed at empowering Arab women and spreading awareness about the dangers of breast cancer.

El-Qabbag asserted the importance of safeguarding the health of women, which is key to the development of the family and society as a whole.

The minister praised the role of Dr Nadia Shoeb as head of an Arab charitable organisation concerned with women’s status.

“I hope to benefit from the expertise of this great woman, who has been listed for the last six years by Forbes Magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential women, in the programmes of ‘Yes’ initiative,” the minister said, adding that this initiative will shed light on the achievements of Arab women as role models for youth, as well as coordinating Arab initiatives for women’s health.

The minister noted that the conference coincides with the start of awareness campaigns to prevent breast cancer in the month of October each year. In this vein, the platform started its activities with spreading awareness about breast cancer and unifying Arab research for its treatment.

El-Qabbag thanked Egypt’s political leadership for attaching a special importance to the country’s economic and social policies supportive of women’s rights.

Civil associations working in health contribute almost 30 per cent to meeting the needs of the public in remote and rural areas.

The minister referred to the significant role played by social pioneers for spreading awareness among rural Egyptian women who are in most need of health care, education and economic support.
