CAIRO – The fourth Arab regional conference on human rights kicked off Monday at the Arab League General Secretariat HQ.

The conference is meant to shed light on the impact of Covid-19 on human rights in the Arab region.

Participants will also focus on efforts exerted to curb repercussions of the pandemic for the Arab economy and society.

AL Assistant Secretary General Haifaa Abu Ghazala stressed the importance of studying and analysing lessons from the coronavirus disease.

The goal is to learn the lesson to guarantee social and economic stability, Abu Ghazala said in an inaugural speech.

She said NGOs play an important role in promoting peace, security and stability in line with national legislation.

National human rights institutions have been contributing to boosting awareness of citizens about human rights principles that should be heeded while applying precautionary measures in the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus, Abu Ghazala added.

Hopefully, the conference would come up with recommendations to boost basic human rights in times of crises, she expressed.
