CAIRO – Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad conferred on Monday with Acting Assistant Administrator for the USAID Bureau for Middle East Andrew Plitt and his accompanying delegation on a set of environmental files including biodiversity, environmental tourism as well as including the environmental issues in the educational curricula.

During the meeting, Fouad reviewed Egypt’s preparations for the UN Climate Conference (COP27) and underlined Egypt’s keenness on building on the success of Glasgow summit conference to push forward the agenda of climate action.

The minister also praised the fruitful co-operation with USAID in supporting Egypt’s environmental action programs.

She also said Egypt is seeking to provide a chance for interaction during COP27 through involving all parties concerned with environment in order to come up with tangible results for the summit conference, set for November in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Plitt, on his part, asserted that USAID is seeking to cooperate with Egypt in all fields especially those pertaining to countering the challenges posed by climate, in addition to climate finance mechanisms as well as sustainable tourism, the Red Sea Initiative and environmentally-oriented educational curricula.

The two sides also discussed the development in the management of nature reserves in Ras Mohammed and Sharm el-Sheikh along with co-operation in outlining the biological diversity map in the period after 2020 as Egypt is planning to announce its plans for declaring new maritime reserves during the UN Climate Conference (COP27).

The two sides also addressed the private sector’s investments in the field of environmental tourism and the responsibility of some companies to preserve the natural resources.
