Sisi visits Djibouti, hot wave and more in our News Digest 11 - Egyptian Gazette

Our esteemed readers, before you embrace the weekend, we want to bring you the latest developments in yesterday’s press.

President Sisi historical visit to Djibouti, Madbouli review of Hurghada development projects, the hot wave, Indian strain and black fungus among other news which made Thursday, May 27, press headlines.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and his Djiboutian counterpart Ismaïl Omar Guelleh had talks in Djibouti yesterday, during which President Sisi expressed Egypt’s rejection of imposing a “fait accompli” in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file.

He added that a fair and balanced agreement must be reached on the filing and operation rules of the dam.

President Sisi’s visit to Djibouti is the first by an Egyptian president over the history.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli discussed yesterday with Local Development Minister Mahmoud Shaarawi and Red Sea Governor Amr Hefni the development projects in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada City.

The development projects are part of the preparation for the return of the tourism, which was halted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Egyptian Meteorological authority yesterday warned Egyptians of a hot wave expected to heat Egypt in the forthcoming days.

As of next Monday the country will face a soaring temperature, with the highest registering 37C°, to be 39 C° on Tuesday in Cairo and to 43 C° at South Egypt.

If you still have questions about the presence of black fungus in Egypt; do not worry.

The representative of the World Health Organisation in Egypt, Dr Dr Naeema Al-Gasseer, confirmed that so far, the Indian strain with the black fungus has not been detected in Egypt, and no case of infection has been recorded yet.

The Indian strain is present in Iran, Morocco and Bahrain.

Also, yesterday the Jeddah Court of Appeal sentenced Egyptian Eng Ali Abul Qassem to 8 years in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of 50 thousand Saudi riyals. Have you ever heard about his case?

In few words, Ali Abul Qassem is an Egyptian engineer who was wrongly sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia in 2017 on charges of smuggling drugs to the Kingdom.

Since he was arrested, his family tried persistently to save him from the imminent death sentence and appealed to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

In 2020 a Saudi court overturned the death sentence issued against him.

Sources said that Abul Qassem could be released if the verdict is ratified and the fine is paid since he spent more than two thirds of the punishment.
