Egypt joined African countries Tuesday in celebrating the Africa Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963.
The OAU became the African Union on July 9, 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the Africa Day continues to be celebrated on May25.
The OAU is the first organisation for joint African action. It embodied the meanings of solidarity and unity between the countries and peoples of the African continent.
Egypt has played a pivotal role through its influential and continuous contributions to the development of the mechanisms of joint African action, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The African Union and its mechanisms constitute the structure around which the countries and peoples of Africa rally in order to strengthen the peace and security structure in the African continent, push forward the issues of sustainable development and combat poverty, diseases, epidemics, terrorism and extremism, which are goals that African countries seek to achieve through AU’s Agenda 2063.
Egypt, while celebrating this special day, reaffirms its adherence to joint African action, and spares no effort to reach the continent’s goals, preserve its interests and support the AU’s agenda for the benefit of the countries and peoples of Africa. Egypt also calls on the international community to continue its support for the continent in the face of the new challenges posed by the “coronavirus” pandemic that threatens stability and development.
