Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi hailed as “deep and strong” relations between Egypt and the European Union, especially in light of the common challenges they face on both sides of the Mediterranean and the negative repercussions of the successive international crises on the global economy in general, especially in the fields of energy and food security.

Sisi made the remarks as he received on Wednesday President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen; in the presence of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tareq el Molla, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt Christian Berger, and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.

During the meeting, von der Leyen praised distinguished historic relations binding the European Union and Cairo, noting that Egypt is a hub for security and stability in the region which, she said, is currently going through a crucial stage of severe turmoil, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.

She also described Egypt as a key strategic partner for the European Union.

The meeting touched on aspects of cooperation and mutual dialogue between Cairo and the European Union in all political, economic and security fields, especially that the EU-Egypt partnership priorities document for the 2021-2027 period shall be issued soon.

The document is set to define areas of cooperation between the two sides in the coming years.
