Cairo- The 7th East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) meetings opened here on Wednesday.
Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Natasa Pilides, chairperson of this year’s session, inaugurated the event via video conference.
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek el-Molla, who is also EMGF 2022 rotating president, moderated the opening session.
Energy ministers representing EMGF permanent member states, alongside representatives from the US, the European Commission and the World Bank are taking part to discuss energy-related topics.
El-Molla’s speech to the session highlighted the forum’s role in securing energy supplies and increasing exports to Europe.
Participating ministers expressed their commitment to continue to engage various parties, including governments, business partners and the private sector, to mobilise financing and technologies to de-carbonise natural gas and reduce methane emissions.
For her part, the Cypriot minister underlined the forum’s efforts to work out solutions to secure energy needs on the global and regional levels.
Molla said that hosting the forum here attests to Egypt as a major player in the establishment of a natural gas hub in the Mediterranean region.
The forum, established in 2019 as an international organisation headquartered in Cairo, aims to establish a regional gas market in the eastern Mediterranean and enhance trade relations among the member states.
