News Digest: Egypt extends COVID-19 restrictions and GERD among top news 11 - Egyptian Gazette

Good morning our esteemed readers; welcome to our News Digest Wednesday, May 20.

Yesterday was a busy day, topped with President Sisi wrapping up of successful visit to France, pandemic restriction measures, GERD file and return of flights.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi returned back home yesterday, wrapping up a successful visit to France, during which he engaged in several, extensive activities, which have resulted in adopting several initiatives for supporting the African continent and Palestine.

Also yesterday, the government has extended most of the covid-19 restriction measures until the end of the month, as daily infections have been decreasing slightly over the past three days, but still above 1k. The decision will require all schools to go back online at the beginning of June

On the GERD file, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aati revealed yesterday that there are 3 possible scenarios waiting Egypt in the coming period, coinciding with Ethiopia’s second filling of the Renaissance Dam reservoir.

The first scenario is the occurrence of a high flood with safe levels in the High Dam Lake, being sufficient to absorb the surplus. The second scenario is the occurrence of a moderate flood, letting the amount of water that Ethiopia will store behind the dam to be reduced.

The third and worse scenario is the coinciding of drought with the second filling of the dam that by the way will affect the downstream countries.

Also yesterday, the first two commercial Saudi Airways flights from Riyadh and Jeddah to Egypt since Saudi lifted its covid-19 travel ban landed in Sharm El Sheikh yesterday.
