European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will meet during her Wednesday visit to Egypt with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to review the close partnership between Egypt and the European Union (EU), along with an array of global issues, including food security and co-operation in the energy and climate domains.
“Under our broad partnership, we will focus on: tackling food insecurity in the region and in the world, extending our energy and climate co-operation and ensuring a successful COP27,” the senior EU official said on her Twitter account.
In an exclusive interview with MENA on Tuesday prior to her visit to Egypt, the European Commission president said the EU is willing to give full support to Egypt to ensure the success of the upcoming UN climate summit COP27, to open in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh in November.
The EU plans to invest €1 billion in Egypt between 2021-2027, von der Leyen said, noting that such a large sum could yield up to €9 billion in additional investments for Egypt’s economy and infrastructure.
