The Indian Embassy in Cairo will celebrate The 8th International Day of Yoga (IDY) with activities in a number of governorates including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Sharm el-Sheikh.

“Since last year, we resumed celebrating IDY in non-virtual manner after the decline of the number of infected cases and the huge drives of vaccination everywhere in the world,” India’s ambassador to Cairo Ajit Gupte said in a press briefing.

The Ambassador added that Yoga is the valuable gift of the ancient Indian civilisation to the world.

“Yoga addresses the spiritual, mental and physical aspects, and so it helps people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which enhances harmony between mind, soul and body,” the Ambassador added.

“The need for Yoga has never been so relevant to people’s life like today, as the spread of the pandemic resulted in feelings of pressure, anxiety and isolation among people, and so it is important to promote our mental, inner and spiritual peace and yet maintain our physical fitness via the various yoga asanas. In addition, Yoga helps improving the efficiency of lungs through Yoga’s breathing techniques,” the Ambassador explained.

To celebrate IDY, the Embassy of India has organised an event in Alexandria at Bibliotheca Alexandrina on Sunday, and will organise another event in Sharm El Sheikh at Sharm El Sheikh Museum on June 14 and in Luxor at Karnak Temple on June 19. In addition to a number of yoga workshops at Heliopolis Club and Al Shams Club, the Embassy will also organise a big event on June 21 at 7:30 am at Al Azhar Park in Cairo.

The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on 21 June since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his UN address in 2014, had suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
