CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Housing Assem el Gazzar has said that partnership with the World Bank (WB) in implementing the sustainable sanitation programs in rural areas in addition to other projects greatly contributed to restructuring and developing the drinking and waste water sector.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting held with the team members of the WB at the end of the meetings of the joint WB and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) mission, currently visiting Egypt to follow up on the Sustainable Rural Sanitation Services Program and the WB Program for Results (SRSSP- PforR) phase 1-2.

The meeting was held to discuss the progress achieved so far in works of the program which is aimed at improving and providing sustainable sanitation services in the rural areas and preserving water resources and public health of citizens.

Success achieved so far in the program stems from the fruitful cooperation with the WB and the AIIB as well as the great expertise and professionalism of the team members responsible for implementing the program, Gazzar said.

The minister reviewed the strategic plan for sea water desalination which is sought to benefit the State in providing water requirements for the national development projects being implemented across the coastal areas nationwide.

He pointed out to the project management unit (PMU) that has been established at the ministry and the sub-units that have been formed in the targeted governorates, he said.

Meanwhile, the WB team hailed the performance of the ministry’s PMU and its effective role in building the capacities of the water companies.
