A presentation ceremony of medical equipment for combatting Covid-19 took place on March 23 at Fayoum University with the attendance of Oka Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt.

The equipment will help Egypt’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and contribute to the Japanese-sponsored training of African medical experts at Fayoum University, a press release issued by the Japanese Embassy said.

Fayoum Governor Ahmed El-Ansary, Ambassador Mohamed Khalil, Secretary General of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), Dr. Yasser Hatata, President of Fayoum University, and Kato Ken, new Chief Representative at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Egypt office, attended the ceremony.

Equipment such as autoclave sterilisers and a real-time PCR system were presented to Fayoum University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine to improve their sterilisation procedures, expand their research capabilities, and further enhance their third-country training program for African countries, the statement said.

Over the years, Japan, in cooperation with the Egyptian government, has been promoting third-country training programmes for Africa in Egypt and trained more than 1,800 African experts in the medical and healthcare fields.

Fayoum University has been one of the most important partners of JICA in third-country training programmes since 2008.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Oka expressed his hope that this provision of medical equipment will further promote Japan-Egypt cooperation in the health and medical sectors, the statement said.

Japan supports Egypt in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic with assistance of more than $250 million, it added.
