US Vice President JD Vance has been involved in indirect talks with Iran for the past two weeks, seeking a new ceasefire and the resumption of nuclear negotiations, two sources familiar with the matter said.
Vance has spoken almost daily with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and other mediators, according to sources with direct knowledge of the discussions.
Two weeks ago, Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, proposing a resumption of direct negotiations, the sources said.
President Donald Trump is willing for now to let diplomatic efforts continue and see whether an agreement is possible, US officials and regional sources said, according to Axios.
Sources involved in the mediation said progress had been made, but described it as very slow.
Vance had been the most sceptical voice in Trump’s inner circle about the war before it began at the end of February, favouring a diplomatic solution. He has blamed the conflict for Republican losses in this week’s election.
