Yemen’s armed forces are investigating reports that Houthi fighters used toxic gases in the southwestern governorate of Taiz, a military spokesperson said, describing the allegations as a serious concern requiring thorough verification.
The military is monitoring information and field reports alleging Houthi forces used prohibited substances during operations in the province, the spokesperson said in a statement.
Any confirmed use of toxic or chemical agents would constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and conventions governing armed conflict, the spokesperson said, according to YemenOnline.
The allegations come amid intermittent clashes between government forces and Houthi fighters across several fronts in Taiz, one of Yemen’s most conflict-affected governorates.
The military said it was coordinating with relevant authorities and field units to examine the reports and assess available evidence. It said it was committed to protecting civilians and documenting violations.
