Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), Ali El-Ghamrawy, met on Wednesday with Meisha Sampson, Director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Liaison Office for the African Medicines Agency (AMA), alongside Ravi Bharwani, Deputy Director of the FDA’s Office of Global Policy and Strategy, and Michael Metzler, Unit Chief for Supply Chains at the US Department of State’s Office of Global Health Security and Diplomacy.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of AMA Week 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, to explore avenues for strengthening regulatory co-operation and expanding bilateral partnerships.
Discussions focused on enhancing technical collaboration and exchanging expertise in post-marketing surveillance, pharmacovigilance and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections.
Both sides also examined ways to strengthen regulatory reliance, promote alignment with international standards, and develop institutional and technical capacities.
The meeting further explored opportunities to improve post-marketing surveillance systems, make greater use of regulatory decisions issued by reference authorities, and refine regulatory reliance mechanisms.
These measures aim to improve regulatory efficiency, advance internationally aligned practices and support the World Health Organisation’s regulatory objectives.
The EDA reaffirmed its commitment to building sustainable international partnerships, fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening regulatory cooperation to advance Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector.
The initiative also reflects the authority’s continued efforts to enhance collaboration with international regulatory bodies, promote the adoption of best practices, improve pharmaceutical oversight, and ensure public access to safe, effective and high-quality medicines.
