Syria closed its main border crossing with Jordan on Tuesday, suspending passenger and commercial traffic in both directions because of developments in Daraa province, the Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs said.
The closure followed Jordanian air strikes on what Amman described as militant hideouts in southern Syria. Jordan said suspects linked to last week’s deadly church attack in the kingdom were connected to “terrorist groups” operating there.
The Nassib crossing is Jordan’s only passenger and commercial border point with Syria.
Damascus said Jordan had not coordinated with it before carrying out strikes in southern Syria on Monday. Syrian authorities were investigating the attacks and discussing them with Amman, state news agency SANA reported.
Syria’s foreign ministry said it had conveyed its “complete reservation” about operations on Syrian territory without prior coordination. Communication with Jordan was under way to address the incident while protecting Syria’s security and sovereignty, it said.
