Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar affirmed that healthcare is an essential investment in human capital and a pillar for sustainable development.
Speaking at the Rotary seminar at the American University in Cairo alongside WHO and UNICEF representatives on Saturday, Abdel Ghaffar noted that Egypt achieved an international milestone in October 2026 by maintaining the WHO gold tier status on the path to eliminating Hepatitis C.
He referred to Egypt’s comprehensive strategy to develop the health system through expanding services, enhancing prevention, and updating infrastructure.
He reviewed the National Health Strategy 2024–2030, highlighting that out-of-pocket health spending dropped from 62.6 per cent in 2018 to 57.2 per cent in 2023, targeting 28 per cent by 2030.
The minister revealed that government health spending rose from LE42.4 billion in 2014/2015 to LE511 billion in 2026, while the General Health Insurance Organisation covers 70.6 million citizens.
He detailed that presidential initiatives screened millions, waiting list interventions treated 3.4 million cases, and over 1,300 health projects were implemented over 12 years with investments totaling LE403.4 billion.
