Egypt has invested about LE25.6 billion in higher education and scientific research projects across Sinai and the Suez Canal cities as part of its efforts to support comprehensive regional development, according to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The projects include the expansion of educational institutions, infrastructure upgrades, the modernisation of laboratories and training workshops, and the introduction of academic programmes aligned with regional development priorities and labour market requirements.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdelaziz Konsowa said developing higher education in Sinai extends beyond increasing the number of institutions. He noted that the strategy also focuses on improving the quality of education and research, promoting applied and interdisciplinary programmes, and strengthening partnerships with industrial and research institutions. These efforts aim to equip graduates with the skills needed to compete in both local and international labour markets.
Ayman El-Shibiny, President of Arish University, said the university is implementing development projects worth around LE1.7 billion to upgrade infrastructure and enhance its educational, research and community services.
Among the flagship projects is a 50-feddan integrated medical complex that will include a university hospital, an emergency hospital, faculties of pharmacy and nursing, and specialised clinics. The complex is intended to strengthen medical education, practical training and healthcare services in North Sinai.
Work is also progressing on the equipping of Arish Technological University, expanding access to technological and applied education that meets labour market demands.
El-Shibiny added that Arish University is expanding student activities, medical and development convoys, blood donation campaigns and public awareness initiatives. The university has also secured approval to establish a technology valley on campus to help transform scientific research and innovative ideas into practical applications that serve society and productive sectors.
Adel Abdel Ghaffar, the ministry’s media adviser and official spokesperson, said the expansion of higher education in Sinai and the Suez Canal cities reflects Egypt’s broader development vision. He stressed the importance of aligning academic programmes with economic needs and strengthening co-operation between universities, industry and research institutions.
The announcement coincides with Egypt’s celebrations marking the 53rd anniversary of the October 1973 War and highlights ongoing efforts to develop Sinai and prepare skilled graduates to support sustainable development.
