Egypt condemned on Sunday the continued Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank, including repeated settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque under Israeli police protection and tighter restrictions on the movement of Palestinians, warning of the consequences for the situation in the Palestinian territories.
Egypt also firmly rejected statements by Israeli officials calling for an expansion of operations in the West Bank and the undermining of the Palestinian Authority.
Cairo called for an immediate halt to all unilateral and escalatory measures and stressed the need to respect the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.
Egypt renewed its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
