Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Saturday met with Andrey Petrov, First Deputy Director General for Nuclear Energy at Russia’s Rosatom and President of its engineering division, Atomstroyexport (ASE JSC), to review progress on the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project.
The meeting focused on the latest developments in construction, including progress against the project’s timetable and deadlines for each implementation stage, as well as preparations to receive the first nuclear fuel next year.
The two sides stressed the importance of continued co-ordination and close co-operation between Egyptian and Russian teams to ensure the project remains on schedule.
Esmat reviewed progress across the various stages of implementation, including preparations for the arrival of nuclear fuel and work to connect electricity generated by the plant to Egypt’s unified national grid.
The discussions also covered the manufacture of equipment and machinery for the project, including power-generation turbines for the plant’s reactors.
The two sides discussed expanding training programmes to prepare the workforce required to operate the plant, including opportunities for both domestic and overseas training. They also stressed the need to take all necessary measures to meet the project’s implementation schedule and deadlines.
Esmat said the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is a key pillar of Egypt’s national energy mix strategy, which aims to expand the use of clean and renewable energy, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and meet rising electricity demand.
He stressed the importance of continued co-ordination between Egypt and Russia to complete the project, describing it as a reflection of the historic ties and strategic partnership between the two countries.
