Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Bahraini counterpart Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani discussed efforts to contain regional tensions during a phone call on Saturday, Egypt’s foreign ministry said.

Abdelatty, who is also minister of international co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates, reaffirmed Egypt’s “full solidarity” with Bahrain in confronting any threats to its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He stressed that the security of Bahrain and the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states was an integral part of Egypt’s national security.

The call was part of continued consultations and close coordination between the two countries, the ministry said.

Abdelatty called for an end to the current escalation and urged all parties to avoid actions that could widen the confrontation.

He said favourable conditions should be created for a return to political and diplomatic channels, describing them as the most effective means of addressing regional tensions and safeguarding security and stability.

The ministers also discussed strong bilateral relations between Egypt and Bahrain, as well as rapidly evolving regional developments and their implications for the security and stability of the wider region.

They reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close coordination and consultations in the coming period and intensifying efforts to contain tensions and promote de-escalation.

The ministers stressed the need for sustained diplomatic engagement and concerted regional efforts to preserve security and stability and spare the peoples of the region the potentially serious consequences of a widening confrontation.
