Egypt is planning to invest LE36.8 billion to upgrade, modernise, and expand its electricity transmission network as part of the country’s energy transition and efforts to accommodate growing renewable power generation, Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) Chairperson Mona Rizk said on Monday.

Of these investments, 45.96 per cent will be allocated for completing ongoing projects, while 54.04 per cent is earmarked for new projects, replacement works, and regional control centres aimed at improving grid performance, Rizk added while reviewing a report during the EETC General Assembly.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat chaired the meeting, which was also attended by Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmed Rostom, to approve the company’s planning budget for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Esmat underscored the vital role played by the EETC in implementing the state’s energy transition strategy, which focuses on expanding renewable energy, reducing reliance on conventional fuels, and improving the efficiency and reliability of the national grid.

He stressed the need to step up efforts to transform the traditional electricity network into a smart grid while ensuring it has sufficient capacity to accommodate new generation projects and meet rising demand.

The development of transmission networks across various voltage levels is being carried out in accordance with international standards, with a focus on operational efficiency and the optimal use of resources and assets, he said.

Esmat highlighted Egypt’s plans to boost its status as a regional energy hub through electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries, ensuring efficient electricity trading while meeting expected increases in demand.

Three regional control centres are currently being developed and upgraded in the Delta, Cairo, and Alexandria, he noted. The centres will support the National Energy Control Centre and enhance the management and reliability of the national grid.
