Air traffic indicators at Egyptian airports from June 1 through the end of August 2026, compared with the same period in 2025, showed continued positive growth in passenger arrivals and departures at several major and tourist airports.
The increase comes amid growing demand for Egyptian destinations, with Sohag and Alamein international airports recording notable growth, alongside continued strong performance at major airports supporting tourism.
Sohag International Airport recorded the highest growth during the period, with 2,053 flights compared with 574 during the same period in 2025. Passenger numbers also rose to 263,472, compared with 77,021.
The notable growth follows the reopening of Sohag International Airport on March 1, 2026, after comprehensive development and efficiency upgrades aimed at improving its technical, operational and service capabilities and allowing it to handle increased air traffic.
Alamein International Airport also recorded notable growth, with 1,857 flights compared with 1,530, while passenger numbers increased to 120,345 from 98,175.
The increase highlights Alamein Airport’s growing role within Egypt’s airport network and its contribution to tourism and international events, particularly as preparations continue for the second edition of the El Alamein International Airshow (EIAS 2026).
Among the major airports supporting tourism, Hurghada International Airport saw flights increase to 18,208 from 17,310, while passenger numbers rose to 2,711,731 from 2,640,441.
Sharm El Sheikh International Airport also maintained high operating levels, with passenger numbers increasing to 2,001,905 from 1,989,249, reflecting continued strong demand for Egypt’s tourist destinations.
At Cairo International Airport, Egypt’s main gateway and a key hub for arrivals and departures, the airport recorded 57,440 flights compared with 56,699 during the same period in 2025. Total passenger numbers increased to 7,942,903 from 7,830,717.
Cairo International Airport continues to serve as a major hub for passenger and logistics traffic. It also ranked as Africa’s leading airport in terms of scheduled seat capacity, according to the latest OAG data for June 2026.
Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh el-Hefny said the positive indicators recorded during the summer season reflect the ability of Egypt’s airports to meet growing demand for travel to Egyptian destinations.
He added that the ministry continues to implement plans to improve airport efficiency and strengthen operational and service capabilities to accommodate the expected increase in passenger traffic.
El-Hefny said the ministry is also working to maximise opportunities for Egyptian and foreign airlines by encouraging them to expand their networks and open new markets, helping increase inbound air traffic and improve connectivity with target markets.
He added that civil aviation is a vital sector supporting tourism and the economy due to its direct connection to travel, trade and investment. The ministry is prioritising maximising the economic benefits of air transport in line with the state’s sustainable development goals, while supporting efforts to boost tourism and attract more investment.
