Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation, and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, held phone talks on Sunday with US Senior Advisor to the President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos, to discuss regional developments, mainly in Sudan, the Horn of Africa and Libya.

On Sudan, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national institutions, rejecting attempts to establish parallel entities.

He stressed the need to ensure safe and sustainable humanitarian access while advancing an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process that meets the people’s aspirations for security and stability.

On the Horn of Africa, the Egyptian chief diplomat stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of regional states and avoiding unilateral actions that threaten regional peace and security or seek to impose maritime access by force in violation of international law.

He also highlighted Egypt’s participation in the 2nd summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Kampala late in July, stressing the need to provide the mission with the necessary funding and support.

Referring to Libya, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the unity of its national institutions.

He called for a comprehensive Libyan-led political settlement leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.

Boulos, for his part, commended Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and unify Libyan institutions. The two sides agreed to maintain close coordination and support political and diplomatic solutions to regional crises.
