Egypt is stepping up the development of Damietta Port to increase its capacity to handle containers and cargo and receive mega-ships, strengthening the competitiveness of Egyptian ports and the country’s position as a regional transport, logistics and transit trade hub.

The Cabinet’s Media Centre highlighted the port’s development in a video published on its social media platforms, as part of a wider plan to modernise Egypt’s ports and upgrade their infrastructure and services.

Damietta Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Tarek Adly said the port, established in 1986, has undergone several development phases.

The first phase began in 2004, with Damietta Port becoming the first Egyptian port to introduce an automated management system, digitising various procedures across the port authority.

The second phase, launched in 2019, included a 680-metre multi-purpose terminal with a 17-metre draft. The current phase includes the Tahya Misr 1 terminal, with 1,970 metres of berths, depths of up to 18 metres and a 922,000-square-metre yard.

Upcoming projects include a grain terminal with 850 metres of berths and an 18-metre draft, as well as Tahya Misr 2, a multi-purpose terminal with 3,320 metres of berths and a 20-metre draft. The navigation channel will also be deepened to 22 metres.

Adly said the port recorded its highest cargo throughput since its establishment, handling 46.4 million tonnes in the 2025-2026 fiscal year and receiving 3,312 vessels. The first phase of Tahya Misr 1 has attracted more than $600 million in investment and is expected to reach a capacity of 3.3 million TEUs when fully operational.
