One worker was killed and five others injured after a rock fell inside a tunnel at Egypt’s Sukari gold mine in the Eastern Desert, the Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry said on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Abdel Rahman Nabil Mahmoud. The injured workers were taken to the One-Day Surgeries Hospital in Marsa Alam, where their conditions were reported to be stable, according to preliminary medical reports.
Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi offered condolences to Mahmoud’s family, colleagues and relatives, and ordered that all necessary support be provided to them.
Badawi also instructed officials to ensure the injured receive full medical care and that their conditions be monitored continuously.
The ministry said a committee had been formed to investigate the circumstances and causes of the accident, review occupational health and safety procedures at the mine, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents.
Work in the underground section has been temporarily suspended pending completion of the necessary procedures and verification that all safety requirements are in place before operations resume.
The ministry said the safety and wellbeing of workers remained its top priority and that it was closely monitoring developments and the condition of the injured.
