Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli made an inspectiontour in the Rumaila seawater desalination complex in Matrouh Governorate on Sunday.

He was accompanied by Minister Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sweilem, Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad, Housing Minister Randa El‑Menshawy and Governor Mohamed El‑Zamlout.

During the tour, Minister El‑Menshawy stressed that Matrouh is given top priority in Egypt’s urban and tourism expansion plans, requiring continuous upgrades to water and sanitation infrastructure to meet seasonal demand. She also confirmed that desalination is a strategic solution for securing potable water in the governorate.

The Holding Company for Water and Wastewater reported that the Rumaila complex has a total capacity of 125,000 cubic metres per day, Chairman Moustafa El-Shemi told the prime minister.

Rumaila (1–2) produces 48,000 cubic metres daily with eight units and 20,000 cubic metres of storage, while Rumaila (3) adds 12,000 cubic metres. RumAila (4), with four production units, contributes 65,000 cubic metres daily and can be expanded to 130,000 cubic metres, El-Shemi saud.

Premier Madbouli inspected the operating halls, filtration systems and backup power supply, which includes three generators of 2.5 MW each.

He emphasised strict adherence to technical standards and timelines, and highlighted the strategic plan for 10 desalination plants in Matrouh by 2050 with a combined capacity of 1.813 million cubic metres per day.

The prime minister also called for accelerating the expansion of Alamein’s desalination plant to 150,000 cubic metres daily, stressing that desalination projects are national priorities to ensure sustainable water supplies for citizens and seasonal visitors.
