9th August 1956 — American sprinter Willie J. Williams has set a new 100 metres world record of 10.1 seconds in Berlin, surpassing Jesse Owens’s 1936 mark of 10.2 seconds. Chicago’s Ira Murchison equalled the new record time before finishing second to Williams in the final.
