During the 11th edition of ICAO African-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Week, Captain Karim Gamil, Adviser to the President of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority and Director General of International Agreements, presented Egypt’s experience in supporting African countries’ readiness to meet relevant international requirements.

He outlined Egypt’s approach, which focuses on strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing institutional capacity, and making use of Letters of Authorisation (LoAs) as a tool to improve implementation and compliance with international standards.

Gamil said Egypt’s experience has demonstrated the importance of building an integrated regulatory and legislative system based on updating oversight frameworks, investing in training and capacity building, and developing qualified technical personnel.

He also stressed the importance of early coordination among all relevant national authorities as a key factor in ensuring the effective implementation of international requirements.

He added that Egypt has successfully incorporated these requirements into its national civil aviation regulations, providing a solid regulatory foundation that supports future development, strengthens the sector’s readiness, and offers a model that can help promote capacity building and the exchange of expertise among African countries.

The session brought together representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), as well as officials from civil aviation authorities across Africa. Discussions focused on balancing environmental compliance requirements with institutional capacity building while supporting the sustainable growth of the continent’s civil aviation sector.
