Egypt’s petroleum sector, in co-operation with UK energy major BP, is set to bring the Fayoum North-4 natural gas well in the Mediterranean Sea into production in the coming weeks.
The move is part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy to increase domestic gas output, maximise the use of existing infrastructure, and reduce reliance on imports.
The well is expected to produce around 80 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (mcf/d).
The development follows the successful completion of a new sidetrack under BP’s drilling programme to boost gas production in Egypt.
The operation has enabled the well to be brought back into production from new reservoir layers without the need to drill a separate well, highlighting the use of innovative engineering solutions to unlock additional output rapidly.
The additional production is expected to help meet rising domestic demand for natural gas, reduce Egypt’s import bill, and strengthen the country’s energy security.
