Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel-Aati, met on Monday with Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy in Cairo to congratulate him on officially assuming office on July 1 following his unanimous appointment by Arab states.

Abdel-Aati said Fahmy’s appointment reflects the confidence Arab countries have in his distinguished diplomatic experience and leadership, and wished him success in his new role.

The foreign minister reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the secretary-general’s vision to modernise the Arab League’s mechanisms, particularly in the political, economic and social spheres.

He underscored the Arab League’s central role in advancing joint Arab action and stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among member states to serve shared Arab interests.

Abdel-Aati said the political, security, economic and social challenges facing the Arab world require greater solidarity and collective action through the Arab League, reaffirming the Egyptian leadership’s full support for the secretary-general in carrying out his responsibilities.

The two sides also exchanged views on key regional developments, including the Palestinian issue, the situations in Lebanon, Sudan and Libya, as well as the latest developments in negotiations between the United States and Iran.

For his part, Fahmy reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with member states to strengthen joint Arab action, enhance the Arab League’s performance, address regional and international challenges, and promote security, stability and the aspirations of Arab peoples.
