AL warns Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem undermines peace efforts 12 - Egyptian Gazette

The Arab League’s General Secretariat on Tuesday denounced the opening of an embassy by the so‑called “Somaliland Region” in occupied Jerusalem, calling it a blatant violation of the international consensus on the city’s legal status and a setback to global efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy and the two‑state solution.

In a statement issued by its Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, the AL emphasised that it rejects the move in both form and substance, describing it as yet another attempt to cement the illegal occupation. The statement noted that the action reflects ongoing measures by the occupying power to alter the Holy City’s legal, historical, and demographic character, disconnect it from its Palestinian environment, and weaken the Palestinian presence and claim to sovereignty there, WAFA reported.

The AL reaffirmed that such actions are null, void, and without legal effect under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

It reiterated that East Jerusalem is an inseparable part of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, and renewed its firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to establish an independent, sovereign state within the June 4, 1967 boundaries, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the Arab Peace Initiative and pertinent UN resolutions.

The General Secretariat also reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It urged the international community to assume its legal and political responsibilities by taking the necessary steps to safeguard Jerusalem’s legal and historical status and to prevent any attempts to impose new realities on the ground or legitimise the Israeli occupation and its unlawful practices in the occupied Palestinian territory.
