Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa said the ministry considers university sports a key part of building students’ character and encouraging teamwork and belonging.
He made these remarks during his meeting on Monday with Minister of Youth and Sports Gawhar Nabil to discuss ways to develop university sports and increase student participation in athletic activities and competitions.
The meeting focused on preparations for Egypt’s hosting of the 12th African University Games, “Cairo 2026.”
The talks also covered plans to develop university leagues, youth events and Egypt’s participation in international university championships.
Konsowa stressed the importance of expanding sports participation across public, private, national and technological universities nationwide.
The minister added that Egyptian universities have long played a role in discovering and developing talent in sports and other fields.
He also highlighted support programmes for talented student athletes, including incentives, scholarships and facilities that help them balance academics and sports.
For his part, Nabil stressed the importance Egypt places on youth development and coordination between state institutions.
He said universities represent an important base for discovering sports talent and preparing future leaders.
