Ahl Masr Foundation and Hospital for Burn Treatment has announced the successful treatment of a critically injured burn patient using natural skin grafting, in one of the hospital’s most complex cases after burns covered 84 per cent of the patient’s body.

The achievement adds to its record in advanced burn treatment, noting that it has successfully performed more than 20 natural skin graft operations so far as part of its efforts to improve burn care in Egypt and the region, the hospital said in a statement.

The patient, 41-year-old Sameh from Cairo, suffered severe burns during a house fire caused by a gas leak while repairing a water heater.

Sameh, his wife, and their two children were afflicted with varying degrees of burns. The four were hurriedly carried to a nearby hospital for first aid. Three days later, the father later taken to Ahl Masr Burn Hospital, where a medical team decided to use natural skin grafting because of the severity and extent of the burns.

The advanced procedure helped stabilise the patient, reduce complications, and improve his chances of recovery as part of a comprehensive treatment plan involving several medical specialties, the hospital said.

“The case highlights the importance of providing advanced burn treatment solutions in Egypt,” said Professor Naeem Mo’men.

Investing in burn care is a humanitarian necessity and noted that natural skin grafting can play a major role in saving lives and improving recovery chances, he stressed.

Ahl Masr Burn Hospital is the first and largest free hospital specialised in burn treatment in Africa and the Middle East. Opened in 2024 with a capacity of 60 beds, the hospital provides treatment for burn patients from across Egypt and the region.
