Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam affirmed that water security is no longer solely a national issue but has become a shared responsibility closely linked to sustainable development, requiring serious co-operation among countries based on trust and mutual respect.
In a statement issued on Tuesday on the sidelines of his participation in the 5th Istanbul International Water Forum, the minister said he is taking part in the ministerial roundtable session, in addition to holding a number of bilateral meetings with ministers and senior officials from a number of countries to discuss ways to enhance co-operation with Türkiye in water sector.
Sewilam noted that this participation comes at a highly important time, given the growing global challenges in the water sector due to climate change and population growth, which places water issues at the forefront of international priorities and underscores the importance of adopting integrated visions to enhance the resilience of water systems.
He stressed the importance of strengthening trans-boundary co-operation as a key pillar for achieving water security, based on principles of international law, trust and mutual benefit without causing harm to any party, alongside the need to boost multilateral action and integrate water issues into the climate agenda.
He added that the United Nations (UN) 2026 Water Conference represents an important opportunity to advance the global water agenda, particularly in light of Egypt’s presidency of the third interactive dialogue, reflecting the country’s active role in supporting cooperative solutions and promoting international efforts to achieve water security.
