Egypt condemned attacks against Gulf Arab states during an emergency session of the Food and Agriculture Organization convened to address the severe impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure on global food security.
Bassam Rady, Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to UN organizations in Rome, praised Gulf countries for their contributions to the international community and denounced the assaults they have faced. The session, chaired by Mina Rizk as elected Chair of the FAO Executive Council, adopted its final resolution by consensus after extensive consultations.
Rady described the crisis, now in its second month, as an unprecedented shock to energy systems, fertilizers, and agricultural industries, worsened by disrupted trade through the closed strait. He reaffirmed Egypt’s consistent position, highlighting Cairo’s efforts to contain the conflict and prevent escalation, while condemning Iranian attacks against Gulf states, Jordan, and Iraq.
Egypt stressed that a political track remains the only viable path to stability, underscoring the importance of freedom of navigation and secure maritime routes as principles of international law. Rady also cited President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s recent warning that the crisis has cast dark shadows over the international system, threatening regional stability, global trade, energy, food security, and supply chains.
The resolution condemned the attacks and the strait’s closure, mandating the FAO to provide technical support to affected member states.
