CAIRO – Egypt’s Ambassador in Athens, Omar Amer, affirmed that the participation of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife in the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) comes in response to the invitation extended by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

He told MENA on Friday that such participation also reflects the great appreciation Greece holds for Egypt’s leadership, government, and people, as well as its ancient civilization, which is one of the pillars of human heritage.

Amer said the attendance of the Greek Prime Minister and his wife at the opening ceremony embodies the unique nature of Egyptian-Greek relations, which were promoted to the level of a Strategic Partnership during the visit of President Sisi to Athens in May.

He noted that Greek Parliament Speaker Konstantinos Tasoulas will participate in a special celebration organized by the Egyptian Embassy inside the Acropolis Museum—Greece’s National Museum—to coincide with the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the opening events will be followed via a live broadcast from Cairo.

He highlighted the welcome from the Acropolis Museum management to host the Embassy’s celebration and the keenness of its officials to follow this global event, in a message that confirms the position of Egyptian civilization among the Greek people and Greece’s pride in the depth of the historic relations that unite Cairo and Athens.

He explained that the celebration will also witness the participation of senior political, cultural, academic, and media figures in Greece, alongside a select group of specialists in Egyptology and archaeology, as well as members of the Egyptian community and lovers of Egyptian civilization.

The ambassador stressed that the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum receives wide attention in Greek circles, particularly in light of the historic and geographical links between the Egyptian and Greek peoples, which contributed to shaping a distinct civilizational and cultural dimension that left a clear mark on the course of humanity.
