A new chapter in Egypt’s rich history is about to unfold. As preparations for the long-awaited grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) enter their final stages, an exciting development is underway: the world-famous collection of King Tutankhamun, the legendary boy king, will be transferred for the first time ever to a dedicated gallery at the GEM.

As a result, the Tutankhamun Gallery at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will close its doors starting October 20.

This moment marks the final step in relocating the remaining priceless treasures of King Tutankhamun to their new home at the GEM, set dramatically at the foot of the Giza Pyramids.

For the first time, over 5,000 artifacts discovered in the young pharaoh’s tomb will be displayed together in one spacious, purpose-built gallery.

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, has reassured visitors that the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will continue to welcome guests as usual during its regular hours, with only the Tutankhamun Gallery closed for the transfer.

The GEM’s brand-new Tutankhamun gallery promises a sweeping, immersive experience.

This unprecedented exhibition will allow visitors to journey through the life and treasures of one of ancient Egypt’s most famous rulers, all in one breathtaking setting.

“This is a truly exceptional moment in the history of archaeology and museums worldwide,” said Khaled. “To see King Tut’s entire collection reunited, telling his story together for the first time, will be a dream come true for historians, archaeologists, and visitors from Egypt and beyond.”

To prepare for this grand debut, the GEM will be closed to visitors starting October 15 for final organisational preparations.

The museum’s official opening will take place on November 1, with the doors opening for visitors from November 4, timed beautifully to coincide with the 103rd anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Since October 16, 2024, the GEM has been operating in a trial phase, with select areas open to the public.Official visiting hours were introduced in February 2025, with the museum open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm year-round.

Moreover, extended evening hours are available every Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, enhancing accessibility for visitors.

GEM is set to become a global hub for showcasing Egypt’s rich archaeological heritage, housing over 100,000 artifacts.
