Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Vice Admiral Osama Rabie has said that car carries crossing the Suez Canal are expected to increase by not less than 20 per cent during the second half of 2025.

Rabie made the remark as the BYD XI’AN, one of the world’s largest car carriers, crossed the Canal for the first time, as part of the Southern convoy, coming from Singapore and heading to Italy.

BYD XI’AN is 219 metres long, 37 metres wide, with a draft of 10 meters, and a capacity of 9,442 cars. It had 7,000 cars on board, he added. It is owned by the Chinese largest electric cars company BYD.

BYD HEFEI, crossed the Suez Canal on June 27.

The SCA chief noted that the Canal witnessed several positive indicators of the regularity and rise of car carriers crossing the water way, crossing rates despite the current challenges.

For his part, BYD XI’AN captain, Rizwan Kapadi, emphasised that the Suez Canal will remain the shortest, fastest and safest route for global trade.
