South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his accompanying delegation made a tour early on Friday of the Third Metro Line.

The South Korean leader was accompanied by Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir, who showed him through different areas in the facility.

President Moon’s tour included a number of South Korean rolling stocks. He boarded one of the trains on its journey to one of the stations in eastern Cairo where the workshops of the National Railways Authority, which operates the metro, are located.

Minister el-Wazir conveyed the joy of train workers at the visit of the Korean president.

The Cairo Metro, the minister said, is an important facility.

He described the metro as an ’embodiment’ of distinguished relations between Egypt and South Korea.

Minister el-Wazir noted that co-operation between the two countries has been fruitful in many transport areas.

President Moon listened to an explanation from the minister about the Third Metro Line, which links the eastern part of Greater Cairo with its western part, travelling a distance of 41.2 kilometres.

The line, he said, would be implemented over three phases, containing 19 stations in total.

Minister el-Wazir referred to an agreement his ministry signed earlier with Korea’s Hyundai Company for the manufacture and supply of 32 air-conditioned trains for the third line.

He also referred to a contract, through which the same company would provide maintenance to the trains for eight years.
