Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb of Al-Azhar has expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences following the passing of Pope Francis, who died earlier today at the age of 88.1

In an official statement released by Al-Azhar, Imam el-Tayyeb eulogized Pope Francis as “a symbol of humanity,” emphasizing the late pontiff’s unwavering dedication to advocating for the marginalized and fostering interreligious and intercultural dialogue.2

The Grand Imam highlighted the significant advancements in relations between Al-Azhar and the Vatican during Pope Francis’s tenure. He specifically referenced the Argentine pontiff’s participation in the Al-Azhar International Peace Conference in 2017, and his co-signing of the landmark “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.”

“Pope Francis demonstrated a profound commitment to strengthening ties with Al-Azhar and the broader Islamic world,” stated Imam el-Tayyeb. He pointed to the late Pope’s numerous visits to Muslim and Arab nations, as well as his consistent and humane perspectives on critical global issues. Notably, the Grand Imam acknowledged Pope Francis’s vocal condemnation of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip and his steadfast opposition to Islamophobia.

Imam el-Tayyeb concluded his statement by conveying sincere condolences to the global Catholic community and to the family of the late Pope Francis.
