CAIRO – The 2024–2025 Egyptian Premier League’s exceptional season has resumed after a 27-day hiatus due to international break and continental club commitments. The competition has now entered the second round of its second phase, which is divided into two groups: one competing for the league title and the other battling to avoid relegation.

This season features a unique format with 18 teams structured into two phases. The first phase followed a traditional single round-robin system, after which teams were separated into two groups based on their standings.

Under the revised structure, the number of matches per team has been reduced from 34 to 25.

The top nine teams have been placed in the Championship Group, where they are competing for the league title and qualification spots for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. These teams include Pyramids FC, Al-Ahly, Zamalek, Al-Masry of Port Said, NBE Club, Ceramica Cleopatra, Pharco FC, Petrojet, and Haras el-Hodood.

The bottom nine teams are placed in the Relegation escape Group, where they are fighting to avoid demotion to the Professional League. These teams include Talae El-Geish, ZED FC, Smouha, Al-Ittihad of Alexandria, Ghazl el-Mahalla, El-Gouna, Ismaily, Enppi, and Modern Sport.

Teams have carried their points from the first phase into the second and will play each opponent in their respective group once more, with fixtures taking place at reversed venues from the initial phase.

At the end of the season, the bottom two teams from the Relegation Group will be demoted to the second division, while three teams will be promoted from the Professional League, expanding the top flight to 19 teams for the 2025–2026 season.

Enppi 2–1 Modern Sport

Enppi secured a crucial 2–1 victory over Modern Sport in the second round of the relegation escape group, strengthening their relegation survival hopes.

Modern Sport’s right winger Mohamed Mosaad scored their only goal in the 46th minute. Striker Ahmed Amin Oufa scored a penalty in the 69th minute, as centre-back Mohamed Hamed sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal in the 90+2 minute.

The victory lifts Enppi to eighth place with 15 points, while Modern Sport remains last in the relegation group with 12 points.

Ismaily 0–0 Al-Ittihad

Ismaily and Al-Ittihad of Alexandria played to a goalless draw at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in the second round of the relegation escape group.

Both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances amid solid defensive displays, resulting in a stalemate.

The bottom two teams at the end of the phase will be relegated to the second division, known as the Professional League.

Championship Group

The Championship Group continues this week with a key fixture between Zamalek and Haras el-Hodood on Sunday at Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

Zamalek, led by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, will be aiming to bounce back from their recent CAF Confederation Cup exit. They currently occupy third place with 35 points.
