Esmat: Deal reflects gov’t commitment to developing renewable energy sector

Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli attended the signing of an agreement between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for the construction of a 500-megawatt wind farm in the Gulf of Suez region.

The partnership agreement, signed by Mona Rizk, Chairperson of EETC, and Ayman Saad, CEO of Siemens Gamesa in Egypt, directly supports Egypt’s energy strategy. It advances the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy’s goal of maximising renewable energy’s role in the national energy mix.

It also underscores Egypt’s commitment to enhancing private sector involvement in the development of solar and wind power projects, the Cabinet Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed al-Homosani said.

“Under the agreement, Siemens Gamesa will be responsible for the construction, financing, and operation of the wind farm. The project is expected to significantly contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in Egypt’s electricity production, in line with the government’s goal of achieving 42 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and 65 per cent by 2040,” al-Homosani said, noting that the initiative is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand reliance on clean energy, reduce fossil fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat has made it clear that this project reflects Egypt’s keenness to develop the renewable energy sector, optimising the use of natural resources, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Esmat also highlighted Siemens’ long-standing role as a key partner in Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy projects, expressing confidence in the company’s expertise in delivering high-impact sustainable energy solutions.

According to him, Egypt views renewable energy as a pillar of sustainable development, contributing to environmental preservation and future energy security.

Esmat emphasised that Cairo’s vision is in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims for universal access to affordable, clean, and sustainable energy. He highlighted Egypt’s position as a leader in renewable energy in the Middle East, with large-scale projects developed in partnership with the private sector.

Ayman Saad, CEO of Siemens Gamesa in Egypt, said that the company has a strong track record, highlighting its contribution of 1.5 gigawatts of clean energy.

“We are enthusiastic about this new agreement and eager to expand our renewable energy footprint in the country,” he added.
