Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Dr Mohamed Samy Hefny, emphasised the country’s unwavering commitment to enhancing its role in the global aviation community during the reopening ceremony of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) newly renovated Middle East Regional Office in Cairo.
The office, which has been hosted by Egypt since 1953, serves as a pivotal hub for advancing civil aviation in the region. “It is a source of pride for Egypt to continue hosting this vital office, reflecting ICAO’s recognition of our capabilities and our dedication to supporting the aviation sector as a key driver of economic development and international co-operation,” Hefny stated.
Dr Hefny also highlighted the visit of ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano, noting its significance in reaffirming Egypt’s critical role in addressing global aviation challenges and fostering sustainability in a rapidly evolving sector.
Sciacchitano expressed his gratitude to Egypt for its long-standing support and extensive contributions to ICAO’s objectives, praising the government and aviation leaders for their continuous efforts. “The newly renovated regional office underscores Egypt’s commitment to supporting international organisations and advancing the aviation industry amidst global challenges,” he said.
ICAO Secretary-General Juan Carlos Salazar echoed this sentiment, describing the reopening as both a celebration of ICAO’s legacy and a vision for the future of aviation. He announced plans for a new strategic framework that will include innovative goals, updated standards, and a restructured organisation to ensure the sector’s continued growth.
In conjunction with the event, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities organised a cultural tour for ICAO officials, including visits to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Hanging Church, and the Pyramids of Giza. The delegation also attended an event marking ICAO’s 80th anniversary at the Pyramids, in the presence of the ministers of civil aviation and tourism.
ICAO officials were captivated by Egypt’s rich heritage, praising the exceptional presentation of its history and landmarks. The tour was led by Dr Ashraf Mohie, Director of the Giza Pyramids area.
The event highlighted Egypt’s dual focus on advancing aviation and promoting its cultural legacy to the world.
