CAIRO – Deputy Prime Minister and Health and Population Minister Khalid Abdel Ghaffar announced on Wednesday the goals and expected outcome of the second edition of the Global Congress on Population, Health and Development (Global PHDC 2024).

The conference, hosted by the Ministerial Group for Human Development, will be launched on October 21-25, under the aegis of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the congress aims at promoting health, well-being and justice via achieving the Universal health coverage (UHC), promoting equality and empowering communities to improve levels of well-being by promoting social justice.

It also aims at building a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future, addressing climate challenges and reducing risks, promoting sustainable livelihoods and building strong communities, the spokesman added.

The spokesman further noted that the main goal of the congress is “Knowledge valorisation”, also known as knowledge commercialization or knowledge transfer, is the process of transforming research findings into innovations or IP with a tangible value.

As for the expected outcome of the 2nd edition of the congress, Abdel Ghaffar said that expectations revolve around enhancing a deep understanding of global and regional trends in the health, population and human development domains, identifying actionable links between population, health and sustainable development.

It is also expected to boost cooperation to confront population and health challenges, and expand the scope of best practices in the field of population health and human development, the spokesman said.

The congress will bring together experts, policymakers and researchers from around the world to exchange experiences and share expertise around the linkages between population, health and development.

As one of the main strategic and technical partners of the congress, UNFPA is contributing to a number of sessions with speakers from different UNFPA offices to promote the ICPD agenda and advance the narrative around population and development.
