Egypt and Hungary signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance co-operation between Egypt’s El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and Hungary’s Paks II Nuclear Power Plant.
The signing took place in Cairo on Tuesday during a meeting between Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty and his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó. This memorandum of understanding marks a significant step in strengthening energy ties between the two countries.
Following the signing ceremony, which was attended by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat, the two sides held extensive talks, during which Abdel Atty stressed the importance of reinforcing political and economic relations between Egypt and Hungary. He expressed appreciation for Hungary’s support on various issues and highlighted the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries.
Abdel Atty said Egypt looks forward to expanding cooperation with Hungary in fields such as energy, industry, tourism, vaccine production, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, alongside broader collaboration in Africa.
The talks also touched on key regional developments, including Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the West Bank. Minister Abdel Atty reaffirmed Egypt’s call for an immediate ceasefire and stressed the importance of allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza. The discussion dwelt on the rising tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border, with Egypt working to prevent further escalation in the region.
Additionally, the ministers discussed the crises in Sudan, Libya, and Syria, and the growing risks posed by the Red Sea tensions to maritime security and international trade. Abdel Atty also reiterated Egypt’s concerns over water security, calling for a binding legal agreement on Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam to ensure the rights of downstream countries are protected.
