‘Egypt warns against risks of opening new front in Lebanon’

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has called for international community action to defuse tension and halt escalation in the Middle East, warning in this context against the risks of opening a new front in Lebanon.

The President’s remarks came during his meeting with the visiting Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Q. Brown, and an accompanying delegation, Presidency spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

The Defence Minister and Commander-General of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Meguid Sakr, and the US Ambassador to Cairo, Herro Mustafa Gar, attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on the ongoing developments in the Middle East region, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

President Sisi emphasised that the current regional situation requires a firm and unified response from the international community and all influential parties. The president called for exerting all efforts and intensifying all pressures to defuse tensions and halt the escalation that threatens the security and stability of the entire region.

He also warned against the risks of opening a new front in Lebanon and stressed the necessity of maintaining Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty, the Presidency spokesman said.

On the Gaza crisis, President Sisi emphasised that Palestinians in the Strip are suffering from such tragic humanitarian conditions that demand an immediate cessation of the war in order to deliver the huge amounts of the relief and health aid needed, spokesman Fahmy said.

In this connection, President Sisi stressed the necessity of responding to joint   Egyptian-American-Qatari efforts to achieve an accord for the immediate cessation of the war in Gaza and the exchange captives and detainees, thereby advancing the path for calm and stability in the region, spokesman Fahmy said.

President Sisi stressed the necessity of rallying international efforts towards launching an all-out political track that leads to the establishment the independent Palestinian state within the framework of the two-state solution as a foundation for sustained regional stability.

Discussions during the meeting reflected the depth of strategic between Egypt and the United States, and the ongoing co-operation and coordination between the two countries in various fields, including in the foremost the security and military fields, the Presidency spokesman said. In this regard, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff expressed his country’s appreciation of Egypt’s pivotal role in support of stability, security, and peace in the Middle East.  The US, he added, is looking forward to widening the prospects of co-operation with Egypt towards in a way that serves common interests and supports stability and peace in the Middle East.
