The Egyptian Interior Ministry organised a tour on Wednesday to Badr Complex, which includes a Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre, affiliated to the Social Protection Sector of the Interior Ministry.
Members of diplomatic missions and human rights organisations joined the tour to the centre that aims at rehabilitating inmates and preparing them for integration into society after serving their sentences, the ministry said in a statement.
It added that the establishment of such a centre stems from the ministry’s belief in respecting human rights. It also helps complement the ambitious steps taken by the ministry regarding the development of places of detention as one of the core priorities of the penal enforcement system as per the National Human Rights Strategy, launched by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
Built according to the finest architectural systems and by the use of modern technology, the centre includes three sub-centres designed in a circular shape to provide 24/7 renewable ventilation and natural lighting to inmates.
Each sub-centre has civilised and humanitarian inmates ward equipped with screens that display cultural, sports, entertainment, and rehabilitation programmes to reform the intellectual and behavioral course.
It also includes a central hospital to treat inmates with the help of proficient doctors, consultants, and well-trained medical staff. The centre also includes, for the first time, a women’s health unit with the latest diagnostic devices.
It has a library for developing cultural and intellectual skills, educational classrooms, classes for art school, and dedicated places that allow inmates to practice their hobbies in handicraft venues and artistry skills.
There are also indoor grounds for physical exercises and outdoor fields, in addition to some service places for each centre.
During the tour, the inmate visitation areas were inspected, where all precautionary and security measures are in place.
The guests also inspected the centre-integrated court complex, which was established to achieve the highest levels of security and includes 4 administratively-separated courtrooms in order to hold public hearings for the inmates and provide a safe environment for a fair trial, the statement concluded.
