BALI – Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hany Sewilam said that the history of cooperation between Egypt and Uganda went back through many decades.

In 2010, as a memorandum of understanding was signed to implement technical cooperation projects in Uganda, the minister during a meeting with Ugandan Minister of Water and Environment Sam Mangusho Cheptoris.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia.

One of the most important technical cooperation projects in Uganda is digging 75 groundwater wells in various provinces across Uganda to provide clean drinking water to citizens, Sewilam said.

Among the important projects is rainwater harvesting tanks, used to collect and store rain water runoff, in five different provinces to provide water for citizens, livestock and domestic uses, the minister said.

The 5th Extension Agreement for Aquatic Weeds Control under the Equatorial Lakes Project that was signed in November 2023 with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Uganda, Sewilam further noted.

He also underlined the constructive discussion that took place with Cheptoris during the activities of the the sixth edition of the Cairo Water Week (CWW) series of conferences that was held from October 29 to November 2, 2023 and during his visit to Uganda in October 2023.

Sewilam also underlined the importance of the “Establishment of a Navigational Line Between Lake Victoria and the Mediterranean Sea (VICMED)” project.

The minister also reviewed Egypt’s efforts during its presidency of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), as Africa played a key role during many international events, in which the African continent presented a common vision for achieving a safe and prosperous future for water.

Sewilam also invited Uganda to participate in the Action on Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARe) initiative.
