CAIRO – Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Tanja Fajon affirmed her country’s appreciation for Egypt’s role in dealing with the crisis and humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

The minister, in her remarks during the joint press conference on Sunday with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, said “I visited the Egyptian Red Crescent in Arish yesterday and headed to the Rafah border crossing. It was shocking to see the border crossing closed for the fifth consecutive day… You are doing exceptional work for the people suffering in Gaza.”

She emphasized that hunger and famine as means of warfare are unacceptable, stressing the necessity for Israel to allow the opening of humanitarian corridors to ensure the arrival of food, medicine, and all necessities of life to the citizens in Gaza, as the use of famine and starvation as weapons in war is reprehensible.

The Slovenian Foreign Minister pointed out her country’s support for the vital role played by UNRWA in providing humanitarian assistance, calling on all parties to support UNRWA in its ongoing operations and to respect its neutrality and humanitarian role.

She clarified that since October 7th of last year, her country has increased its funding for humanitarian aid to Gaza by approximately 2 million euros, distributed to UNRWA, the World Food Programme, and the Red Cross. She also mentioned that this year, half a million euros were allocated to UNRWA, with two shipments of aid sent to Gaza in February of this year.
